David Allen Flowers is a composer, pianist, and conductor based in Evanston, IL. He graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University in 2016 with a degree in Music Composition, where he also studied piano and flute. His music covers a wide variety of ensembles and styles, from solo and chamber instrumental pieces to large ensemble works for orchestras and choirs. He also writes musical theater and has co-written several works since joining the ‘etc.’ Music School as Assistant Director. In 2016 he participated as a composer in the Fresh Inc. New Music Festival, and met collaborators with whom he would continue to develop new music, in the form of commissions and new music chamber concerts. In 2018 he joined Opera for All’s Guest Teaching Artist roster, guiding Chicago Public School classrooms in the creation of new songs for the stage.
David also serves as a Music Director for Chicago Opera Theater’s “Opera for Teens”, program, and Assistant Music Director for the Savoyaires—Chicago’s Gilbert and Sullivan troupe. He is the Assistant Conductor and Development Coordinator for the Ridgeville Community Band, and Music Director for Windy City Perform’s Youth Company and Kids Company. He can regularly be found coordinating or producing new chamber music concerts around the City of Evanston, with an effort to diversify the classical repertoire and provide accessible opportunities for arts exposure to the community.
As a teacher, he works to create a curriculum which inspires a love of music and a curiosity for creative work. He believes every student is capable of learning and instrument and crafts lesson plans that are unique to the interests and strengths of each particular student—with a strong focus on general technique and music literacy. His hope is for every student to leave their lesson feeling more enthusiastic about their practice and excited about the vast swath of sounds their instruments are capable of creating.
